Senor Fred on Ventura at about Woodman. Great atmosphere (very dark and kind of Queer Eye Meets Spain) and really good food and service. Their chips are PERFECT.

Also, Solley's, owned by the Jerry's Deli people, on Van Nuys Blvd just north of Ventura. It's much more mellow than Jerry's on Ventura, and you can actually hear your friends talk, unlike post-renovation Jerry's, which too quasi-industrial now to absorb noise.
      • Solleys = yes, Senor Fred = No.

        Mon, March 20, 2006 - 10:48 AM
I like Solleys (didn't know they were owned by the Jerry's folks), but have had 3 bad meals in a row at Senor Fred's. The last time with a group of 8, every meal was sub-par. They're great for atmosphere and drinks, but the food is lame.

Aha! The Jerry's deli connection- funny, because the one time I went there I thought "Great- another deli with a million-item menu that doesn't do any of them particularly well", thinking Jerry's had cornered the market. Their cabbage borscht would put a diabetic in a coma. Didn't like the food at all, but the atmosphere is nice and old-school.

Carnival on Woodman just north of Ventura is a great Middle Eastern restaurant, and pretty inexpensive. Best Fool Madamas I've ever had, all the standard grilled or skewered meats are very good, plus there are some more unusual items on the menu and a good selection of vegitarian dishes.

Amir's Falafel, 11711 Ventura Boulevard, is pretty good for, well, falafel.

There's a Mexican place called Bronco's that's on Woodman and Moorpark that has good cheap stuff.

Nicely's is a great little sandwich/breakfast place on Cahuenga in a strip mall just before Barham on the highway side.

There's a great french dip sandwich place next to the car wash that's east of Guitar Center.

Shiki is great and has a sushi lunch special that is too big to finish. It's next to The Sportsman's Lodge toward's Jerry's in a strip mall.

Bollywood for Indian across from the Fox and Hounds (Ventura/Vineland area)

Those are my choices. I hope you likee.

OK, thought of another one, but this'll be like a guessing game since I have no idea of the name. It's a Vietnamese place on the east side of Sepulveda near- I think- Sherman Way, at the north end of a strip mall that mainly houses an enormous Asian supermarket, the name of which also escapes me... lame, I know, but I've got a call out to my friend who took me to the market originally, maybe she can at least remember the cross street.

For a cheap lunch the market is great, they have a to go section in the back. I just get the stuff to go and head to sepulveda dam basin. Also there's a place across the street "Pho" something, I like it better.

The market is 99 Ranch. I love to shop for little gifts there.

At Senor Fred, I had two chicken tacos with rice and beans. It was really good. My sister had a salad -- I don't remember which salad, but there were only one or two without meat -- and she loved it.

Pappo's Hot Dog Show on Riverside, across from Bob's Big Boy (which is great on Classic Car Night too!)

Taste Chicago as I've already mentioned multiple times.

I don't know if it's still there, but there was a Greek place called Athen's Garden on Magnolia by the TV academy that used to have enormous combo plates.

Deeper into the valley there's also El Paso BBQ Steak house on Ventura, which while being in a weird little strip mall, was surprisingly good.

Topanga's not really the valley, but I have to drive through it to get there, and Froggy's is awesome as well.

Grandma Thai Kitchen on Burbank across from Valley College. The food's great and I can never leave without having the coconut ice cream. It's not pretty, but does that matter?

Senor Fred is nice ambience, but Los Torros in Chatsworth is actually better.

Favorite Thai place so far is Lanna Thai (its not that good, I just haven't found a great Thai place in the valley yet).

Hugos on Riverside/Coldwater is definetely in the rotation.

I'm really glad to have seen this thread, becuase dining in the Valley has been pretty 'bald' for me so far. I'm tired of having to drive to Pasadena.

Try Arunee House on Riverside in Toluca Lake. I haven´t been there in years (living in Spain now) but their pad thai and yellow curry are memorable. They have some really nice fish tanks inside and tiny shrines that make the atmosphere cozy too.

The last few times I've been to Casa Vega the food has been really good. I go during the day though cause it's crazy at night.

Oh yeah, I like Nat's so much I started a tribe.

My aunt is in her 80's and has lived in the valley for over 50 years, and I want to take her to Casa Vega, her and her late husband's fav dining spot for decades, but they don't take rez's which sucks cuz I don't want my poor Aunt Mary standing around waiting for tequilla soaked singles to get off their duffs. So it's basically not an option... what other good, traditional, DECENT Mexican places are there in the area?

"what other good, traditional, DECENT Mexican places are there in the area?"

That's the million dollar question. Nobody ever seems to know the answer and that's why Casa Vega's such a zoo.

There´s a tiny place in a smallish strip on the corner of Magnolia and Woodman (southwest, i think) called Ernie´s Mexican cafe. Maybe about 8 tables. The food is very fresh, massive portions, healthy but with just enough grease to make it tasty. There´s veggie dishes too. Fish is outstanding, and all the salsas...
And it´s cheap. And the staff are super friendly.

Los Torros in Chatsworth. Not real close, but very good.

Not close to who? Los Toros is almost walking distance - and not worth it. It's the only place in Chatsworth with valet parking - because it's crowded, not because it's good. Much better Mexican food is a few blocks east at Casa de Carlos. 20549 Devonshire St. Everything there is delish, and the margaritas are top-notch.

It's not a classy joint but Tony's (I think that's what it's called) in the strip mall on Magnolia and Whitsett. Like I said it's not pretty, but it sure is goooood. The family that owns it are really fantastic.

I think that the Great Wok has some really good chinese. I suppose it´s chinese for the states palate, but that´s okay! It´s good. Really fresh, good size portions for the price. I´ve never had a bad dish there. The kung pao shrimp with brocolli and mushu rocks the kasbah.

Spumoni on Ventura Blvd in Sherman Oaks has the best gnocchi in L.A., and the head waiter kicks a$$.

      Spumoni!!!!!!!

The only good italian restaurant in all of LA.

They built on down the street from me here in Valencia / Stevenson ranch--so I don't go to the Sherman Oaks one anymore. But I used to eat there all the time.

<The only good italian restaurant in all of LA.>

*only* is a very strong word. many people think highly of alejo's--but i don't know if they do the valley.

I will try this alejos you speak of.

But there are no good italian restaurants in LA. None that I've experienced.

Spumonis is pretty good. Prob is--I've been eating there for 5 years or more now, and they have NEVER changed their menu. I'd love something new...even a special or two.

Madeo on Beverly, just west of Robertson is incredible. They have in my mind the best, and the ONLY good real Italian style pizza in L.A. (I agree, T-Bird, about the word "only" being strong but no one I have met has ever found better pizza - unfortunately) It's pricey, but worth it. Valentino's in Santa Monica is also excellent. There is a small place on Larchmont Blvd. just south of the Wells Fargo bank that has no corkage fee and absolutely fantastic food.

Marrakesh is really good and fun too.

Ole is pretty good - i hate the tapas thing though. Small plates and expensive prices.

Ginja Lions is really good food - brown chicken is my favorite and super inexpensive and never crowded.

Boneyard Bistro and Mr Cecils are also great for BBQ - boneyard has a bistro menu and is a little more upscale however super cramped inside.

I really want to try Bird Cage on Ventura.

Bird Cage was good. I had a rib eye. My wife is veggetarian, they don't have anything veggeterian except pasta, so they improvised, and it was pretty good.

Note that they only have beer and wine, no liquor license.

Opera, the web browser, has a built-in spell checker.
                        Firefox has plugins.
Safari on Macs have it built in (click in a text field, go to the Edit menu -> Spelling)

Gangadin Indian Cuisine on Ventura Place in Studio City is really good. Not my favorite for atmosphere, but it's really good.

There's another really good Indian place in the McDonald's strip mall on the north side of Ventura just east of Hazeltine, but I can't remember the name of it. It's got a much better atmosphere than Gangadin. Next time I drive by I'll make a point of looking at their name.

I'll have to check those two out - I'm always open for new Indian places.

Anabargh in Woodland Hills is my usual Indian place - it took them years to understand that when I mean -really spicy, its ok, I can take it. They will even make Phal which isn't on the menu (if they know you).

Clay Oven in Sherman Oaks isn't shy about spicy, even if they don't know you. That's also in my rotation.

Akbar in Pasadena is my favorite place, nice ambience too, but just too far away most of the time.

Oh man so many. Here's what comes to mind. I'll add more later when I think of them all...

Mi Casa in Burbank (I know I probably spelled it wrong)
    LaLa's - Studio City
Jacks Classic Hamburger Stand - N.Hollywood/Toluca Lake area
    Dragon St - N. Hollywood
    Little Toni's - N. Hollywood
    Mo's - Toluca Lake
    Pattys - Toluca Lake
    California Sushi - Chatsworth
    The Munch Box - Chatsworth
    Uncle Ernies Pizza - Chatsworth
  • Tony's Mexican, Ahi, Aroma, Nat's

    Tue, June 6, 2006 - 2:02 AM
Tony's Healthy Mexican Grill, always packed little family place/formica heaven on Magnolia @ Coldwater. DEEEElicious, esp. the Salmon plate on Friday nights. So friendly too!
I hear D'Amore's, in the same strip mall, is supposed to have great 'za, but haven't tried it yet.
All the great joints in L.A. are in strip malls, by the way. If you're new to town and don't know that yet.
Ahi, for sushi. On Ventura/ColdwaterAsk Jimmy the owner for the "better than yellowtail". I forget what it is, but it IS (better than YT).
Aroma Cafe in Tujunga Village. On Tujunga, south of Riverside. Kept me from getting homesick for San Francisco when I first moved here many summers ago. Made suffering the miserable, smoggy heat in the V. bearable. It's more the atmosphere than the food, but some of the food is pretty decent. You can get POTS of tea if you ask for them (they're not on the menu). The bookstore and garden rock. B-fast is the best meal.
Speaking of which-Nat's, on Burbank somewhere near Kester (not sure exactly) has great homemade sausage. Although they still can't compare to the phenomenal Nick's near my old home on Pico. Nick's biscuits and gravy are a lifetime experience. I dare you to argue that after tasting them!
