Earlier this week we checked out Creative Sushi on Main St in Santa Monica. They had Happy Hour sushi from 4-6pm. Prices were good, the sushi that we ordered off the menu was melt-in-your-mouth yummy. The sushi chef even sent us a delicious cup of fruit to finish off our meal.
Very yummy and not your run of the meal sushi place. We'll be going back.

I also like going to the Firehouse on Main St in Venice (just down the street from Creative Sushi) for their M-F happy hour and 1/2 price sushi. I never can get enough of the dynamite mussels. Sit right there at the bar and talk to the chef, watch him work his magic, and put the finishing touch on those mussels. Right out of the toaster oven directly to you. No one I've found can match the quality of that dish. I may have something to do with how few seconds it takes for him to put the food right in front of your nose. :)

We use to go to Kaitten on the 3rd Street Promenade, but they're closed at this time. The sign on the door says "temporarily closed", but there is butcher paper up covering all the windows. Wonder if it had anything to do with the bad health dept rating they got back in Feb. Any one know the dets?

Also, my guy raves over Wabi-Sabi on Abbot Kinney in Venice. He has great taste, so I'm really looking forward to checking that place out for sushi.

wabi-sabi isn't bad, but it's more "fun" than it is "good."
the "wabi-sabi" roll is kinda good. it's a neighborhood place and you'll see lots of locals.
i wouldn't put it up against hana on wilshire.

i think creative is pretty good, too.

Sushi Roku in Santa Monica has always been my favorite on the west side. Creative chefs, good fish, cool decor, and it's right by the ocean. The chefs have always been receptive to my special requests or when I just ask for omakase. But it's pricey, and on many nights after 8 pm it's more a beautiful-people singles night than a restaurant. (I like that; some other people don't.)

En Sushi, on 11651 Santa Monica Blvd in West LA, is also good and less expensive. I had great urchin and excellent rolls there.

(But of course, for the best sushi in Los Angeles, you must come to Little Tokyo downtown. I recommend Sushi Gen....)

Hama Sushi in Venice has treated me and mine very well for years. Chaya Venice does a nice job, too; check them out during their happy hour. Sushi Rokku in WeHo (on 3rd & La Cienega) counts as West Side, and has the goods -- expect to spend beaucoup bucks, but you'll enjoy the ride.

I feel like 'best on the westside'- in terms of consistency and quality-not ambience- would be ECHIGO just west of Bundy on Santa Monica Blvd. Its on the second floor of a strip mall. Above a head shop and beside a massage place.

The Lunch Special is amazing value- but the omakase or ordering off the menu-will yield sushi and sashimi a cut above most of the places on the westside in the same price range....and rival the quality of the most expensive sushi in town....

Hirozen may not qualify as Westside since its just East of the Beverly Center-but that's another great spot.

Ballona Fish Market at Maxella has some amazing sushi. The jalapeno ahi is to die for.

I don't see where I posted this: Daichan Sushi (a rotating sushi counter / or order off the fabulous menu) at the corner of Olympic & Sawtelle Blvds. Second floor. Park in the underground structure and tell them you're going for sushi. Daichan will validate for 1 hour. The most we've paid was $2 for parking - think we stayed an hour and a half / 2 hrs. I can't believe I missed posting it. The menu's been recently added to also. Delicious!!

Oh yeah, we checked out a pretty good kaiten (rotating sushi counter) restaurant - reasonably new - in Beverly Hills too. sorry don't remember the name, but directly east of Rodeo Dr and near the Wilshire blvd end of the street. Any one know the name? It was more expensive than Daichan and not any better.

Why don't you just park in the Linens 'n' Things parking garage for free? That's my secret Sawtelle trick. (Although i guess it's not LnT anymore)
