I visited this once venerable establishment (@6th & Los Angeles Sts, in the Pacific Electric building) tonight, for the 1st time since its reopening last year. I had simultaneously been excited about and dreaded returning, after showing up for lunch over a year ago to find its doors seemingly permanently closed. Lofts were being built in floors above (essentially the building had been derelict above street level for many years), and I feared the worst. After my return tonight, I'm saddened to report my fears were justified. Gone are the buffet itself, the old Tiffany lampshades, the comfy/funky/Very cool ambiance, the fabulous pickle chips, amazing cole slaw, the back rooms, the once paycheck-cashing window/accompanying alcove and Any reason to defend their French dip sandwich against Phillipe's.

I suppose its current incarnation is better than none at all, but, if you know/knew/loved it as it was, this ain't any longer it. A sad loss.

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-then8-2008jun08,0,373535.column
From the Los Angeles Times
Claims to original fortune cookies crumble under weight of research
Los Angeles and San Francisco have long argued over where the Chinese dinner dessert was first served, but a new book comes to a surprising conclusion.
Steve Harvey
Only in L.A.

June 8, 2008

It's too bad you can't just crack open a fortune cookie and find out who invented the fortune cookie. Then there wouldn't be a controversy.

Oddly enough, no Chinese cities claim the honor, but a couple of American burgs do: those feuding cousins, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

L.A. boosters have long held that the folded vanilla wafer was invented in 1918 by an Angeleno named David Jung, founder of Hong Kong Noodle Co.

One version reported by American Heritage magazine in 2005 said Jung handed out "rolled-up pastries containing scriptural passages to unemployed men."

Another version has Jung creating the cookies not as desserts, but as appetizers for restaurateurs to serve customers impatiently waiting for their orders.

San Franciscans, on the other hand, argue that the distinction belongs to a gardener named Makota Hagiwara, who was the long-ago superintendent of the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park.

"Around 1907, the story goes, Hagiwara was fired by an anti-Japanese mayor and then rehired after a public outcry," American Heritage said. "In gratitude he gave his supporters cookies with thank-you messages inside." The messages were in Japanese.

So stubborn are the two sides that the matter has gone to court -- well, sort of.

In 1983, the Court of Historical Review in San Francisco agreed to attempt to look into the past and settle the dispute.

A tribunal presided over by an actual judge, the court occasionally tackles issues relating to the proud -- perhaps too proud -- history of the City by the Bay.

Lest you think the fortune cookie fracas too trivial for such a body, keep in mind that the court has also deliberated on whether San Francisco bagels are as good as New York bagels: Absolutely, it said. It ruled on whether Mark Twain was correct in saying that the coldest winter he ever spent was a summer in San Francisco: Absolutely not, it said. And it decided whether San Francisco -- not the nearby city of Martinez -- invented the martini: We'll drink to San Francisco, the court said.

During the fortune cookie trial, a sort of "Perry Mason" moment occurred when a local city employee pulled out a set of round black iron grills and declared that "they were originally used by the Hagiwara family to cook the fortune cookies," wrote Jennifer 8. Lee (yes, the lucky "8." is her middle-name symbol) in her irreverent new book, "The Fortune Cookie Chronicles -- Adventures in the World of Chinese Food."

There was further drama when a fortune cookie was introduced as evidence -- a fortune cookie with a message reading, "S.F. judge who rules for L.A. not very smart cookie."

Grounds for a mistrial? Not in the Court of Historical Review.

The judge decided in favor of San Francisco.

But the matter didn't end there, as any fortune-cookie writer could have predicted.

"Los Angeles boosters ignored his decision, considering it as legitimate as a Dodgers-Giants game officiated by San Francisco sandlot umpires," American Heritage said.

Some years later, the Otis College of Art and Design, for instance, presented a list of 50 "interesting" things born in the L.A. area. It named fortune cookies along with the strapless bra, valet parking and tooth-whitening toothpaste. Of course, Otis is in the L.A. area.

More recently, the controversy took a surprising turn toward the Far East.

Lee discovered that, a few years ago, Yasuko Nakamachi, a researcher at a Japanese university, visited Kyoto and found "a number of small family-run Japanese bakeries selling cookies with a familiar shape."

The treats "were exactly like fortune cookies," though they were called "fortune crackers" or "bells with fortunes," the latter term perhaps dating to when the cookies were shaped like bells.

The researcher also uncovered references to brittle cookies that contained a fortune in the fictional work of a 19th century Japanese humorist. And she chanced upon an 1878 print of a Japanese man making the cookies and using the same type of grill she had seen in Kyoto's bakeries.

So it appears that Kyoto, not L.A. or San Francisco, deserves to be known as the birthplace of the fortune cookie, at least pending future archaeological findings in the Egyptian pyramids or elsewhere.

In a sense, Lee, a Chinese American, was not surprised that such a popular dessert originated in a country other than China: "Traditional Chinese desserts, any Chinese American child will tell you, are pretty bad. There is a reason Chinese cuisine has a worldwide reputation for won tons, and not for pastries."

But for her, there was still "one final mystery."

The messages in the original San Francisco fortune cookies were in Japanese.

How, she wondered, had "the Chinese managed to take over the fortune cookie business" in America?

In San Francisco, Japanese bakers had dominated the industry.

The turning point, her research revealed, was linked to the sad chapter of World War II involving the internment of Japanese Americans. Those who were fortune-cookie makers "had to leave all their equipment behind," Lee wrote.

After the war's end, a sign of the industry's change of direction came when the federal government announced it was lifting price controls on "Chinese" fortune cookies.

The messages inside have also undergone changes with fortune cookies becoming "more like food-for-thought cookies or wisdom cookies," Lee observed. One industry executive told her that predicting people's futures was too limiting and cited the case of one old-fashioned fortune-cookie soothsayer who contracted writer's block and got out of the business.

Then, too, personal predictions can backfire, as in the case of the woman who complained that her husband died soon after getting a message that said, "You'll be going on a long voyage."

The upshot, Lee noted, is that "fortune cookies hardly contain fortunes anymore" -- unless you win the Lotto with the numbers at the bottom of a message.

For all their popularity in the U.S. and Europe, there is one market the cookies haven't penetrated: China.

The Wonton Food company tried in the mid-1990s, but the project failed. As one executive told Lee, fortune cookies were simply "too American a concept."

Which may be of some consolation to L.A. and San Francisco.

All the ramen I've encountered here has been the same kind--thick sort of semi-translucent overcooked noodles with lots of salty broth and pork slices. But this Tonkotsu stuff has opaue almost al-dente noodles and a few different broth options...a spicy red broth and a flavorful red broth.

Maybe I should check out little Tokyo--the shops in the Sawtelle area in Santa Monica all seem to serve the same fare.

I'm a huge fan of prime rib. It's my favorite thing ever. Back home there was this famous restaurant that had been around for 50 years and had the best prime rib of all time. The place recently closed, was bulldozed, and now there's a Wendy's there. Ugh. Anyway, It ruined me for life because no restaurant could compare. The prime rib always sucked everywhere else. Even Vegas, which is arguably the capital of prime rib.

Every once in awhile I'd drive by this funny looking restaurant on Pico--Billingsley's. I read a review on the Internet before I left that said the prime rib was good. But naturally I was skeptical. I decided to pop in and see what it was all about.

Bingo! This place is %99.99999999999999 the same as my favorite (now defunct) restaurant back home! The best prime rib ever!!! I'm sure this is an LA landmark I was just totally unaware of as it's been there since the '60s.

Huge giant heaping portions of buttery tender prime rib. The people in the booth behind me were having some sort of conversation about how they need to get back in shape again. I thought to myself, you're at the wrong place, bub. I'm definitely going to add this to my regular routine of restaurants. Even if it kills me. (Which it probably wil!)

My foundation is hosting it’s Do Something Saturday project. For information and details on how you can get involved, please shoot me a message here on tribe or by email kengikat@gmail.com.

My friend Karen who owns Café Buna is providing 150 meals for this event. I am now hoping to supply clean clothes and shoes in good condition. The push is also on to provide 150 Do Something Kits.

If you didn’t make the trek out to the playa, then please join me and some cool friends in a day of helping those who have less.

Do Something Kit supplies include:

•	New pairs of socks
•	Granola, power, protein or cliff bars
•	bar soap or body wash
•	hand or face towels
•	tooth brushes and tooth paste
•	mouth wash
•	deodorant
•	bottle water
•	beanies (hats)
•	shampoo and conditioner
•	hand lotion
•	large zip lock bags

(all items should be travel size so they can fit into the large zip lock bag)

Your continued donations of these items provide homeless people in the Los Angeles Area the opportunity to keep themselves clean and groomed. It has been our experience that this greatly contributes to the likelihood of someone getting a job and become self-sufficient.

The best place to get these items is from the 99 cent store or from the 99 cent area of all Target store.

I hope to see you at the event.

On another site, years ago, I found a group that was called Sydney Foodies. As I travel to Sydney often, I decided to post and join them for a night out at a great little restaurant. I met some friends that I have to this day.

Why can't a similar sort of group be formed here in this large city of Los Angeles on tribe? The idea is to have periodic gatherings of those who enjoy meeting one another to experience and enjoy food, eating at chosen restaurants.

I don't want it to be a place where people feel pressured to post nor to attend any of the meet-ups. I hope that it can be a place where either you have a great restaurant that you want to try or share with others *in real life*, or if you read a time and place that appeals to you, you simply post and attend. The idea of trying out new restaurants, centered around the act of sharing a meal with one another appeals to me.

Do you think it can work in a city much larger and so different than Sydney?
Here are links to the two tribes created late last night, which are

The service was great...they kept asking us if we were enjoying our food. We sure did...every last bit of it. The beef ribs weren't so good. But when are they ever. The pork ribs were juicy and fell right off the bone. We all agreed that at less than $20 a slab, it was a great deal too. The sweet potatoes were just right...the best I ever had. This has been the best ribs I have had so far. My friend told me there is a place nearby that is just as good, if not better. But they are a "to go" only place. I can't wait to try it.

Do any of you have some good suggestions? This doesn't have to be the most expensive place in the city (probably better if it isn't); what matters most is that if we're spending $40 each on an entree, that we can taste each of those dollars in every mouthfull - I'm looking for the biggest bang for those bucks. Food quality trumps all.

I've gone to some of the more "typical" places (Spago, for example), but it would be fun to try something new.

I went there yesterday and, of all things, I thought their salad bar was out of this world and the reason to go back. The meats were nice, but people say there is better Brazilian BBQ in this city.

My question is - where?

Fogo de Chao features 13 different types of skewer-cooked, grilled meats. They've got top & bottom sirlion (I thought the bottom was better, because it had a nice crispy-ness; the top sirlion was very moist but kind of without flavor. They serve bacon-wrapped chicken & filet. The bacon-wrapped chicken was very peppery, which is not to my taste, but the filet was delicious. They have plain filet as well - very yummy. I don't know what cut of meat their speciality is, but I found that when they served it with their garlic sauce my tastebuds passed out in an overwhelm of joy. My husband, however, said he had 2 pieces and they were both too fatty. Go figure. Their other method of preparing the speciality is with salt, which is good, too (but that garlic, meow). They've got lamb and lamb chops which were excellent; and pork loin, pork chops, and pork ribs - none of which I tried. Their beef ribs were extremely salty and fatty BUT, when that was cut away, absolutely melted in my mouth.

This restaurant is a gluttons paradise, as the only limit to the amount of food you eat is your own appetite. The waiters walk around with meat on spits, and you stop them or ask them to keep truckin depending on which side of a "coaster" you display (sort of like Bubba Gumps, I guess). Despite being an avowed meat-eater, it was a little difficult to see so many huge skewers of dead animals, and to consider how many creatures had to die for one night of dinner . . . but maybe I'm a freak in that way.

The delicious food orgy comes at a price - $52.50 per person for the entire dinner, and - I think - $20 if you only wanted the salad bar (which, as I said, is worth a trip in-and-of-itself. Incredible). Mashed potatoes and delicious polenta comes with the meal; drinks, dessert, and gratuity extra.

Oh - and we also had some of the best service I've ever received. When I tried cleaning up the chunks of cheese and vegetables my baby hurled on the floor, I was stopped and told they would clean it later, we never had an empty glass or need of anything, and everything was done with a smile - WOW! Despite the prices, this place is also family-friendly. I don't know when they begin to charge for kids, but there were many families there, with many small children eating from their parents' plates. We were accomodated with a special water cup for the baby which they filled with milk for free. They also graciously washed off his tray (we brought our on booster seat/tray thing) every time we took Zach for a walk to help get him through the long meal.

So . . . there is my little review, but I am curious where folks go for the best Brazilian BBQ in town?

I'm new to LA, having recently moved here from New Orleans and while a lot of people think of NOLA for Cajun and Creole cuisine we didn't do too badly with our Chinese establishments overall. Still tonight I was coming back from Staples Center and decided to try out a place in Chinatown called Hop Woo on Broadway and it was for the most part an excellent value although the Egg Rolls were way too greasy. But the House Special Wonton and Chow Mein were excellent, cheap and way too much food. Which got me to thinking what other places in Chinatown were even better than that? So since I plan to head out for a few more Kings games this season, what else is there in C-Town that's a real winner? Got to be better than the crap at the Panda Express stand @ Staples.

My current roommate is moving in with her boyfriend, so I need to find a new person to share my 2 BR/2 BA apartment by May 1! It's close to both the 101 and 405 freeways, also very close to the Westfield mall and Trader Joe's. The apartment is lovely, bright, clean, and spacious. It was newly painted and new carpet was installed before I moved in 7 months ago. The available room is large, and has a big attached bathroom as well. With this great apartment comes a small gym, pool, jacuzzi, balcony, and gated covered parking. Utilities are generally around $60 per person and includes electric, gas, cable, and cable modem. I am a laid-back, outdoorsy SoCal native who doesn't make much noise and is relatively tidy. I hope to find someone who is respectful, friendly, and pays the rent on time. :) I love to cook, so fellow foodies always preferred!
